The fighter Cameron relinquishes WBC title in stand against women’s boxing rules

The British fighter chose to relinquish her world championship belt on Friday as an act of defiance against current regulations in female boxing, insisting on the option to compete in three-minute rounds like men fighters.

Stand against unequal treatment

The boxer’s move to vacate her championship belt originates from her clear disagreement with the World Boxing Council’s mandate that women participate in reduced rounds, which the experienced fighter views as gender disparity.

“The sport for women has advanced significantly, but there’s still progress to be made,” Cameron stated. “I firmly believe in equality and that includes the option to compete under equal conditions, identical prospects, and the same recognition.”

Context of the belt

The fighter was upgraded to WBC super-lightweight world champion when the previous title holder was named “temporary champion” as she stepped away from the sport. The boxing organization was preparing for a contract bid on recently for a fight between Cameron and compatriot Sandy Ryan.

Earlier case

In December 2023, another female fighter similarly gave up her championship after the council declined to permit her to participate in matches under the identical regulations as male boxing, with 12 three-minute rounds.

WBC’s position

The WBC president, Mauricio Sulaimán, had stated earlier in 2023 that they would not sanction 12 three-minute rounds in women’s boxing. “Regarding tennis female players compete 3 sets, for basketball the hoop is lower and the ball is smaller and those are not contact sports. We prioritize the welfare of the boxers,” he commented on social media.

Present practice

The majority of female championship bouts have 10 rounds of two minutes each each, and the fighter was among more than two dozen boxers – like Serrano – who started a movement in last year to have the right to participate under the identical regulations as male boxers.

Professional record

The boxer, who holds a 21-1 professional boxing record, stated clearly that her protest extends beyond individual choice, describing it as a struggle for future generations of female athletes. “It’s an honor of my success in attaining a title holder, but it’s moment to make a statement for justice and for the future of the sport,” she concluded.

Coming actions

Cameron is not leaving from professional fighting altogether, however, with her representatives her promotion company indicating she plans to pursue different title chances and marquee bouts while maintaining her insistence on fighting in extended rounds.
